Prakash Jha's Gangaajal is a film about an honest cop fighting the corrupt system in Bihar. It is about a one-man army against corruption.
Synopsis:
The maker of Bandish, Mrityudand, Dil Kya Kare and Rahul is ready with his latest project Gangaajal-The holy weapon. This socio-political drama starring Ajay Devgan, Gracy Singh and others is a remake of a Telugu hit 'Badri'. The music is by Road and Agnivarsha fame Sandeesh Shandilya. According to Jha the film is aptly titled Gangaajal as it becomes synonymous to the weapon used to wash away the dirt and filth spread in our society. Jha has shot the movie entirely in the small village in Wai near Panchgani. And to make his caste complete he has involved thousands of locals of Wai in his film. Tough Jha denies it is also said that this hard-hitting film is inspired from the Bhagalpur blindings in 1983. An event when thirty-one prisoners where policemen blinded them by pouring acid in the guise of 'gangaajal' in their eyes.
Amit Kumar (Ajay Devgan) and IPS officer is posted as a new police superintendent in Tejpur a small town on the banks of sacred river Ganga in Bihar. Amit is an honest cop, he finds Tejpur throttled with corruption, injustice and goondaraj. He sets upon the task of restructuring the police department and some of the policemen too respond positively to his efforts. They find that the weeds of corruption are too strong to uproot. There are policemen who strongly go by the law book and others who believe that following what is termed as legal could do nothing.
The desire to throw away the corruption is so strong that when nothing works they take resort to newly found weapon. And very soon the society that was suppressed for so long finds utterance through this weapon to seek revenge and justice. Amit finds himself at crossroads as his conscience is left hovering between his moral and social duty.
Gangaajal is a realistic film that displays in reel life the real life tiff between criminals and honest cops. The film does not have many songs just a background score and a nautanki song. Gracy Singh will be seen playing Ajay Devgan's wife Anuradha, who helps him in carrying on his duties. Lot is expected from Gangaajal.
